Hebrews 13:5

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

The heading to this chapter in Hebrews is "Sacrifices Pleasing to God." To me this somehow implies that being content with what we have is a sacrifice to us. How ironic is this? I think the world would say this is a sacrifice, but is it really? Do we fail to read the second half of this verse that Jesus, the King of Heaven and Earth, will never leave us or forsake us? Rich or poor, big house or small house, Pinto or Range Rover, minimum wage job at McDonalds or a multimillion dollar CEO position, He doesn't leave.
So often I find myself comparing my life to others. Specifically in material things. In my tiny human mind I don't understand why some families have so much money and some have so little. I look to the people with lots of money and say, "God, that's not fair. Why didn't I get born into more money?" Then, I look at the people with no money at all and say, "God, that's not fair either. Why do they have to suffer?" The thing that He is teaching me through this human observation is that it is fair. It doesn't matter if you have a mound of presents under the tree at Christmastime or if all you have is the company of those you love. God says it is fair because we were all born sinners and He sent His only Son to save us from eternity in Hell. Not only that, but when Jesus was here, He lived in poverty! He didn't have mansion to sleep in, let alone a bed. This is hardly what we humans would say is a fair lifestyle for the King of Creation.
While I am here in Guatemala God is teaching me a lot about contentment. He's teaching me that the only way to have true and lasting contentment is to allow myself to be consumed with that fact that I truly deserve nothing and everything I have is a blessing. I don't deserve a Netflix account, an iPhone, or a gym membership. And most of all, I don't deserve to go to Heaven to walk on streets of gold and live in a mansion built just for me, singing praise to my Creator for all of eternity.
