But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men."
Acts 5:29 (ESV)
We must obey God rather than men. A very simple command that comes with a lot of responsibility. The first thing that pops into my mind when I think of this verse is the Supreme Court case involving the craft store, Hobby Lobby. When the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was introduced, it was written that contraceptives would have to be covered by the insurance provided by the employer. Hobby Lobby, a story owned by Christians, took this new law to Court saying that it was unconstitutional to force their company to provide this kind of medical treatment to employees when it is against their spiritual beliefs. In the concluding decision of the Court ruled that it was indeed, unconstitutional. In my mind, the amazing thing about this story is that Hobby Lobby could have chosen to remain silent and follow the command of the United States Government, but they didn't! They fought for their beliefs.
Just like in this story, we can choose to stand up for what we believe in, or we can go with the status quo. We need to keep in mind that God does teach us that we need to obey authority like in Romans 13:1, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." But we need to be careful to not take our governing body as the highest authority as today's verse states, because earthly authority can become corrupt. This can be the case within our families, our governments, or even our churches. We need to check the decisions being made within these entities against what God has taught us in His Word. It is our own fault if we choose to blindly follow a shepherd who he, himself is lost, off a cliff into a chasm of destruction. Hobby Lobby could have done just that, but instead they stood up for their beliefs and brought the issue to Americas attention.
